Job Description
The Medical Physicist will be responsible for the design, optimization, technical evaluation and safe delivery of radiation therapy to clients of the Authority. He/She will be required to use a variety of computer-aided bio-engineering techniques in their work such as Radiotherapy, X-ray imaging, Ultrasound, Tomography Radiology, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Lasers. Work is performed under the supervision of the Head of Department, Radiology.<div><span style="letter-spacing: 0.4px;">The Authority reserves the right to assign the officer to any Facility under its management.</span></div><div><br></div>
Key and Critical Responsibilities
<ul><li>Plans and executes safe and accurate treatment of all patients and provides advice on radiation protection to members of the treatment team, staff and patients.</li><li>Consults with the SMO, Radiation Oncology, Radiation Therapist; Dosimetrist and other members of the cancer treatment team concerning the development of treatment plans, determination of patient dosage and radiation delivery.</li><li>Develops and maintains a quality management program for all imaging equipment to facilitates the production of images of optimum quality while minimizing radiation doses to patients.</li><li>Supervises the design and fabrication of patient treatment aids or special devices when required.</li><li>Assists with the performing and analyzing of patient specific Quality Assurance measurements including ArcCheck, ion chamber and portal dosimetry measurements to confirm delivery accuracy.</li><li>Designs and implements aspects of the Radiation Oncology Quality Assurance Program that involve the use of external beam radiotherapy equipment and therapeutic radioisotopes.</li><li>Supervises acceptance testing and performance verification of new equipment.</li><li>Contributes to the development of policies and procedures for radiation control; clinical physics, quality assurance and radiation safety programmes.</li><li>Executes and manages various quality assurance/controls on equipment and manages the radiation monitors.</li><li>Supervises the installation, operation, and maintenance of technical equipment used in the determination of radiation exposure and the making of field and laboratory analyses.</li><li>Tests and calibrates all ionizing radiation and gamma ray units and devises safety measures for the calibration dispersing and disposal of all radioactive material.</li><li>Participates in interdepartmental training for technical staff of the facility and provides continuing education lectures to staff, Radiographers and associated allied health personnel when required.</li><li>Establishes and maintains a radiation safety program and oversees the safety and security of radioisotope sources and radiation generating equipment.</li><li>Assists the Head of Department in developing departmental budgets, staffing complements, equipment and infrastructure requirements.&nbsp;</li><li>Keeps abreast of new techniques and technology within the industry by conducting research to improve existing medical imaging technologies and/or through participation in continual medical education programmes and oncology/cancer treatment research.</li><li>Develops and maintains of a quality management program for all imaging equipment to facilitates the production of images of optimum quality while minimizing radiation does to patients.</li><li>Represents the Authority/Oncology Department by sitting on various committees when assigned, such as the Radiation Safety Committee and attending external RHA/MoH meetings.</li><li>Supervises assigned junior staff by assigning and monitoring work, signing/initialing leave applications; coaching and mentoring; providing continual feedback on performance; and completing performance evaluations.</li><li>Assists with the maintenance of the records/filing system in accordance with regulatory agencies and prepares relevant reports when required.&nbsp;</li><li>Performs related work as may be assigned by the Head of Department or Medical Director Secondary Care Services.&nbsp;</li></ul>
Key Competencies
<ul><li>Master of Science or Doctoral degree in Medical Physics or related field.<ul></ul></li><li>Certification with the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or International Medical Physics Certification Board (IMPCB).&nbsp;</li><li>At least three (3) years experience as a medical physicist including clinical experience with Linac calibrations and QC, treatment planning QC and routine use, IMRT planning and delivery.</li><li>Experience with the following equipment will be an asset: Varian Vital Beam accelerators, Eclipse Aria record and verify system, BrachyVision Treatment Planning system.</li></ul>
