Job Description
The Transit Police Sergeant supervises and coordinates the activities of a squad of Transit Police Officers.
Key and Critical Responsibilities
<ul><li>Prepares work schedules and assigns duties</li><li>Monitors and reviews work performed by subordinates</li><li>Appraises and evaluates the performance of subordinates</li><li>Provides guidance and recommends appropriate training for staff</li><li>Grants time off and approves leave</li><li>Initiates disciplinary action</li><li>Conducts roll-call, inspects appearance of officers and examines condition of equipment for conformity with departmental standards before issuing to officers.</li><li>Conducts/directs investigations into alleged violations of the law and makes arrests as required</li><li>Checks/reviews reports submitted by staff for sufficiency of evidence to justify prosecution.</li><li>Attends Court as a complainant or witness.</li><li>Examines and certifies log books/ registers/abstracts/pocket diaries to ensure that entries/ reports are recorded in accordance with regulations/established procedures.</li><li>Guides subordinates on matters relating to regulations, policies and the implications of new/amended legislation.</li><li>Visits and observes officers on patrol or those stationed at designated areas to ensure compliance with regulations/established procedures.</li><li>Plans and conducts certain operations such as roadblocks/searches to ensure compliance with the law in the transportation sub-sector.</li><li>Maintains records of personnel, equipment, firearms, etc and prepares weekly/monthly returns/reports for submission to supervisor.</li><li>Assists with the development of training programmes which are geared towards providing subordinates with special skills relevant to the their jobs.</li><li>Assists with the development of strategies to eliminate criminal activity in the transportation sub-sector.</li><li>Advises and lectures to members of community groups including schools, maxi taxi associations.</li><li>Performs other related duties.</li></ul><div><br></div>

<ul><li>Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices and the criminal justice system in Trinidad and Tobago.</li><li>Ability to supervise effectively.</li><li>Ability to work long hours including at nights and on weekends and public holidays.</li><li>Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine a proper course of action.</li><li>Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.</li><li>Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.</li><li>Computer literacy at a level adequate to perform daily duties.</li></ul><p><br></p><p><b><u>Minimum Experience and Training :</u></b></p><ul><li>At least five (05) years experience as a law enforcement officer in a supervisory capacity and training in law enforcement principles, procedures and practices from a recognised institution.&nbsp;</li></ul>
